about

The Exu's debut single That'll Do It!, showcases the essence of their sound and the uniqueness of their approach in just over three minutes, combining in-the-moment creativity and infectious hooks propelled by a pulsating rhythm section. It's a taste of what's to come from this boundary-pushing trio, promising an exhilarating musical journey that defies categorisation

The Exu are a dynamic band from Leeds, creating attention-grabbing music combining in-the-moment improvised creativity, concise energetic writing, and a lean rock/pop aesthetic for the frenzied digital age.

Comprised of Irish bassist Dave Kane, British saxophonist James Mainwaring, and Norwegian drummer Emil Karlsen, The Exu is respected within the music community and among eager audiences. Drawing inspiration from Leeds' vibrant jazz and improvised music scene, the band's sound is an electrifying fusion of jazz and improvisation with infectious pop hooks and edgy rock elements.

The Exu draws its name and artistic approach from the neo-expressionist New York visual artist Jean-Michelle Basquiat. Inspired by Basquiat's painting "Exu," the band's moniker embodies the trickster psychopomp deity from the Yoruba religion—a patron of boundaries and travellers, invoked during crucial decision-making processes, and responsible for guiding souls to the afterlife. Basquiat's Exu symbolises chaos and a disregard for codified rules and conventional behaviour.
